Pattern Making

Pattern making is the crucial first stage in the casting process, and at AFM, we approach it with the meticulous attention it requires. Before a pattern is made, we run a casting simulation and prepare a method proposal, so gating, feeding and solidification are proven before any metal is poured. Our experienced pattern makers then replicate the final component geometry, accounting for metal contraction, draft angles and machining allowances to ensure the finished casting meets exact specifications.

We collaborate with clients from the earliest phases of product development, reviewing designs and offering practical input to optimise patterns for manufacturability and cost efficiency. Patterns are made in polystyrene, timber, plastic or metal, selected to suit the part, the production volume and the life the tooling needs.

Your pattern is an investment, and we treat it as one. Every pattern is identified, inspected after each production run, repaired where needed and kept in dedicated controlled storage, so a repeat order is made from the same accurate tooling as the first. Pattern accuracy directly determines casting accuracy. At AFM, we protect it from the first casting to the last.

01

Casting Simulation & Method Proposal.

Every new pattern is supported by casting simulation and a documented method proposal, identifying the best gating and feeding before production begins.

02

Contraction Allowance.

Patterns are precisely engineered to compensate for metal contraction during cooling, ensuring final dimensions meet specification.

03

Draft Angle Optimisation & Design for Manufacturability.

Correct draft angles are built in at the pattern stage, and our team reviews customer designs to improve castability, reduce waste and lower production costs.

04

Pattern Maintenance & Storage

Patterns are inspected after every run, repaired where needed and kept in dedicated controlled storage, ensuring consistency across repeat orders and protecting your tooling investment.
